Annual Golf Competition - Marton
4th April 2009
Golf competition organised by Tom Mead
Report by Tom Mead and photographs by Mark Purdy

This years golf tournament was played on the Karston Lakes Course at Gainsborough Golf Club on Saturday 4th April. As the name suggests there is plenty of water on this course and the level of them must have risen several inches with the number of balls that went into them from the Notts golfers. They were warned to take plenty of balls!

Ten players entered and duly turned up at the club at 10.00 for bacon butties and coffee to give them a full stomach before they started. Rain had been forecast but once again we were lucky because although it was very windy the sun shone all the time for us.

The first group of teed of without any major incidents (even though Tom skied his tee shot much to the amusement of the others). This was the first hole where a ball entered water but not the last. “Splash” and “splosh” were heard with amazing regularity throughout the round, and that was before the seventeenth where it was a full carry over water to reach the green, straight into what seemed like a force ten gale but was in reality a gentle breeze. That lake must have risen feet!

Anyway we once again gathered in the clubhouse bar after the round to bemoan bad luck, bad bounces, poor greens, and all that bloody water.

No controversy this year, just good company, good banter, and well done to the prize winners who were:- Overall winner Dave Shreeves
Longest Drive Jason Shreeves
Nearest Pin Dave Shreeves

A special mention this year for Darren Pilgrim – he didn’t win the wooden spoon!!!!

Finally a big thank you to the marshals of the Marston Village Hall rally, Paula Winters and Sandra Purdy, for allowing us to use the rally to run the golf from.
